Everything to know about Sunset Key

Searching for an exclusive Florida Keys escape? To give you a complete guide to one of Key West’s most private destinations, we’ve partnered with travel creator kelly.goesplaces. She recently explored this serene island and has shared her firsthand experience and top tips with us. Based on her insights and our research, here is everything you need to know about visiting the tranquil paradise of Sunset Key.

How to Get to Sunset Key Island

Sunset Key is a 27-acre private island located just 500 yards from Key West. Its exclusivity is maintained by its limited access, making it a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the main island.

Getting to the Ferry
Most visitors fly into Key West International Airport (EYW), which is a short, four-mile taxi or rideshare journey from the ferry departure point. If you are driving, you will navigate to the Opal Key Resort & Marina. Overnight parking is available in the resort’s garage; current rates are approximately $34 per day for self-parking and $44 per day for valet.

The Ferry to the Island
The only way to reach Sunset Key is via the island’s dedicated 24-hour ferry service. The short, scenic ride across the harbor takes less than ten minutes. To board, you must be a resort guest, a resident, or have a confirmed reservation at the spa or restaurant.

The launch departs from the Opal Key Resort & Marina dock at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour. Return trips from Sunset Key leave on the hour and half-hour. While the main schedule runs from early morning until late evening, after-hours service is always available by request. Once on the island, you will find no cars, as residents and guests travel on foot along quiet, manicured pathways.

Where to Stay on Sunset Key Island

Accommodation on the island is exclusively available at Sunset Key Cottages, a luxury resort that offers 40 cottages ranging from one to four bedrooms. These cottages feature classic Key West architecture with pastel-colored wood, Victorian-style tin roofs, and wrap-around porches perfect for enjoying the tropical breeze.

Inside, each cottage provides a comfortable, beach-inspired living space with a full kitchen and living room. For an added touch of luxury, some cottages include their own private plunge pools. A signature perk for guests is the complimentary breakfast basket delivered to your porch each morning, filled with fresh fruits and pastries.

Bookings can be made through the Sunset Key Cottages website.

Where to Eat on Sunset Key Island

Dining on Sunset Key is an experience in itself, with options that take full advantage of the island setting.

Latitudes
Latitudes is the island’s renowned fine-dining restaurant, celebrated for its upscale menu and incredible sunset views. A consistent award-winner, it has been named one of the “100 Most Romantic Restaurants in America” by OpenTable. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating right on the beach, providing a picturesque backdrop for your meal. The menu focuses on fresh, locally sourced ingredients with an emphasis on seafood and creative cocktails. Reservations are essential and should be made at least 30 days in advance.

Flippers Pool Bar
For a more casual meal, Flippers Pool Bar offers a relaxed, open-air setting. Here, you can enjoy a menu of light fare, including their signature Caesar salad and vegan tacos. The bar is known for its handcrafted tropical cocktails, like the Key Lime Colada. As a special treat, complimentary poolside snacks, from frozen drink samplers to popsicles, are offered every afternoon.

In-Cottage Dining
For those who prefer a private meal, in-cottage dining is also available, allowing you to enjoy a quiet dinner on your own porch.

As there is no grocery store on the island, the resort offers a convenient pre-arrival shopping service. Simply email your grocery list to the concierge at least 72 hours before you check in, and your items will be purchased and put away in your kitchen before you arrive. A 35% service charge plus local sales tax will be added to your grocery bill.
